Samburu National Reserve is in the wilds of Northern Kenya, on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. The orangey earth and its Koitogor and Ololokwe mountains the shade of tangerine cast phenomenal sunsets as well as hazy orange mirages during the heat of the day. Home to an abundance of species unique to Northern this rugged environment is the epitome of adventure.
Here the mighty Ewaso Ng'iro River flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests, sustaining all the surrounding wildlife. You may see leopard, lion and cheetah, and surely Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, and reticulated giraffe exclusive to the area. In addition a black rhino population has been re-introduced into the park after an absence of 25 years. Close by is 'Reteti Elephant Sanctuary.' A Samburu Community Project dedicated to nurturing orphaned animals, particularly elephants. Here you can take an inside look at Conservation from the inside.
The Northern Frontier also includes the Laikipia Plateau consisting of National and Forest Reserves, Wildlife Conservancies, Sanctuaries and Ranches. This area is particularly associated with extensive, scientific efforts in restoring endangered species. Laikipia is a science led technological hub in the advancement of regenerating species such as the Northern White Rhino. Some Reserves are exclusive, offering activities banned in national parks, such as night game drives, walking, horse and camel riding safaris. Watching wildlife tends to be a more intimate here however, Samburu is the epitome of adventure, landscapes and the variety of wildlife
